![]() DMG files serve as containers for apps in macOS. When you download an app or a piece of software on your Mac, the file is usually downloaded as a DMG file. How the Disk Image was formatted sets the rules for if you can only read (or both read and write) files within the Disk Image. Mount, an entire Disk Image, or delete it in entirety (as a Disk Image itself is a single large file). This is a different concept than file permissions: File permissions allow you to read, i.e. ![]() File says my dmg file is a VAX COFF executable. Since a DMG is a disk image, I tried to mount it, but mount does not seem to recognize its format. I want to install a dmg file on a remote server. As we earlier mentioned in this guide, we need to convert the DMG to ISO, then use it on VirtualBox. As DMG is the file format of Mac OS X, Windows OS can’t read the file. In this small guide, I will be showing you how to mount DMG file on VirtualBox with the Windows 10,8.1 or any Windows client Operating Systems. So operating systems can't access files on a drive without mounting it first. If you mount a drive one of the things which happens is that the file system type gets identified so macOS afterwards knows how to access the content of the drive (and find the DMG for instance).
